To help transgenders claim equality, Bihar announces welfare board for community

After the formation of the board, the government will also provide financial assistance to those transgenders undergoing sex change.

Earlier last week, two transgenders studying Media and Animation at a college in Patna were reportedly threatened to drop their studies by a group of people from their community.  To their rescue came social worker Reshma, who is also a transgender herself.

The saddest thing, arguably, is that those transgenders who are interested in studies and want to progress face resistance within their community itself.

In order to ward off such instances, a welfare board for the trangenders has been announced by the Bihar government.  The decision to this effect was taken Wednesday following questions raised by JD (U) leader Shyam Rajak regarding the problems faced by transgenders in the state.

After this, Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma proposed the formation of a board for the welfare of the transgenders. Following the formation of the board, the government will also provide financial assistance to those transgenders undergoing sex change.

The government’s decision is being seen as a welcome initiative for the transgender community that is still not being treated equally in the society despite getting the third gender status. From education to employment, the transgenders face problems everywhere.
