Shradha Sharma, a woman from Bihar came up with a different yet very common and relatable concept; to embrace and share the struggle story of every successful entrepreneur through storytelling. Yes, you got it right! Storytelling: the ideology behind the company “YourStory”.

YourStory has been the single most definitive storytelling platform for entrepreneurs, innovators, and change-makers since 2008. Shradha Sharma, the mind behind providing a common platform to all the entrepreneurs, she uncovered all the grey layers between the black and the white phases of a company. A company goes through several ups and downs, building a business or a company requires so much of time, effort, perseverance, belief and most importantly a passion to do something different.

Shradha an ordinary girl from Patna had ambitions that were really high. She has done her primary schooling from Patna and her higher education from St. Stephens College, New Delhi. Then, she went to Ahmedabad to pursue an MBA degree from MICA.

The idea of being an entrepreneur had always appealed to her. 

She started her career as a Brand Consultant for the Times of India. After that, she worked as Assistant Vice President (AVP) at CNP TV 18. While working there she got the idea of storytelling and to turn her idea into reality she quit her luxurious, high paying job to start-up her own venture, as a storyteller. Her never undying passion and hard work helped her to lead her idea and brought her company to this position.

Since 2008, YourStory has published over 20,000 stories of entrepreneurs. YourStory and its derivatives company HerStory, YS TV, YourStory Research and YourStory Pages have reached 60 million engaged readers. YourStory has been the most prominent startup ecosystem builder in India, hosting over 220 events across YourStory Meetups, TechSparks, MobileSparks, and SheSparks. These events have had a direct impact on over 1.7 million people. As YourStory started as an English storytelling platform, ‘YourStory.com’ continues to grow rapidly. YourStory’s team will create original content in Indian languages starting with Hindi, Telugu, Bangla, Kannada, Tamil, and Marathi. YourStory has 16 current team members, including Founder, CEO and Chief Editor Shradha Sharma. She holds 50% stake in her company.

YourStory was initiated by Sharma putting in ₹2 lakh as seed capital. Between 2015 and 2017, YourStory has received investments from Ratan Tata, Vani Kola, Karthee Madasamy and T V Mohandas Pai. YourStory has raised a total of $13M in funding over 3 rounds. Their latest funding was raised on Oct 2, 2017, from a Series B round.

Yourstory is funded by six investors. 3one4 Capital and Kalaari Capital are the most recent investors. YourStory has acquired three organizations namely Pixtory, odiocast and PapyrusEditor.

YourStory uses 53 technology products and services including Google Analytics, WordPress, and Vimeo. The venture has published over 70,000 articles in 12 languages, collecting data through text, videos, social media and other digital platforms that reaches in excess of 200 million people. YourStory attracts 12.5 to 15 million page views and 6 million unique visitors a month. The company also has their own android app. It has 1,457 monthly app downloads. The most popular apps downloaded are YourStory, Kagaz, and YS Tamil. The company has also launched YourStory Germany, which has content on the startup ecosystem in Germany, which is seen as one of the vital hubs for technology and innovation in Western Europe. YourStory will act as a bridge between entrepreneurs in India and Germany.

YourStory is ranked 19,674 among websites globally based on its 4,157,938 monthly web visitors.

She has received many awards including:

  • NASSCOM Ecosystem Evangelist Award for her efforts in building an inclusive startup community
  • Villgro Journalist of the Year Award in 2010 for her coverage of startups
  • 2015 – Listed amongst 500 LinkedIn Influencers across the world
  • 2015 – L’Oreal Paris Femina Award’ for online influence
  • 2016 – PAT Memorial Outstanding Alumnus Award
  • 2016 – LinkedIn’s most viewed CEOs under Internet category

She is an inspiration to all those women who kill their dreams because of the narrow mentality of people and society.
