A Bihar cadre Indian Police Service officer of batch 1967, Jyoti Kumar Sinha is among those honourable people who are enlisted for Padma Shri. He was born in Patna, Bihar and served as Director General of Central Police Force and later as member of the National Disaster Management Authority. After completing his schooling from St. Xavier’s High School, Patna and graduating in History from Patna College, Jyoti Kumar Sinha followed the footsteps of his father and joined IPS. His father late Rai Bahadur Shri A.K. Sinha was the first Indian to become DIG of Police, Bihar in 1939.
Bhagirathi Devi’s journey from working as a sweeper in the block development officer in Narkatiyaganj, West Champaran District and earning Rs 800 per month to becoming a member of Bihar Legislative Assembly is quite fascinating. She worked in the field of girls’ education and spent several years creating mahila sangathans in Narkatiyaganj block, organising women and creating awareness around issues that included domestic violence, violence against dalits and fair wages. She later expanded her political activism to other blocks in the district, going to jail in 1991 for organising demonstrations.
Rajkumari Devi, or as we call her Kisan Chachi, is a living example of how you can master something with your dedication and hard work. This 58 years old farmer from Muzaffarpur is known for her cycling through the dusty lane of the village and advising people over farming and developing the right agro-based products. Because of poverty she had to hold Spade in her hands which led her to become an example for while country, Rajkumari Devi has achieved it all.
