Pedestrians’ plaza to be created around Gandhi Maidan

The Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) will soon equip the buildings surrounding the Gandhi Maidan with façade lights and develop amenities in the area to develop it as a tourist spot. BSTDC officials said on Thursday the initiative was aimed at developing an evening plaza by creating required infrastructure, landscape, ambience and facilities.

The lighting on the buildings around the ground will be installed in a manner to show play of lights with effects to make it attractive for the visitors to the area. “We have invited bids from interested firms for providing consultancy services… The bids will be finalized in few days and the firm will be given three months’ time to submit a final report,” BSTDC’s GM Harendra Prasad said.

As per the BSTDC proposal, prominent buildings such as Biscomaun Bhawan and Udyog Bhawan will have dynamic façade lighting along with LED rooftop and roadside billboards. Also, a dynamic skytracker searchlight is proposed to be installed at the centre of the plaza for festive evenings. Officials said the entire area would be treated as a pedestrians’ plaza in which vehicular traffic would be restricted.

People can move around on foot or in horse carts or e- rickshaws. The plaza will also be beautified with plants, trees and foliage as well as sculptures. A small market selling handicrafts and snacks etc may also be allowed to come up on certain patches. Under the Smart City initiative, incidentally, an open theatre with a large 80ft portable screen is also planned to be developed at Gandhi Maidan.
