HomeBiharPatna University’s Central Library is going to be digitized soon Mayank Jha Bihar Patna University has always been a plinth in the educational anatomy not only for Bihar but for the whole country. It is the seventh oldest university of Indian subcontinent. At the time of its inception, the territorial jurisdiction of the university was extended to Bihar, Odisha, and the Kingdom of Nepal. Patna University gave numerous leaders, writers and other notable alumni which greatly contributed in the development of India. The university hold a great historical significance when it comes to academics in India. Now, the historical Central Library of Patna University is soon going to be converted into an e-library. All the necessary strides are already taken by the authorities of the university. Tenders have already floated for the digitization of books that are in the possession of the library. Central Library has a collection of 4,00,000 volumes which includes textbooks, and reference books, as well as 87 periodicals and 50,000 journals. It also has more than 5000 valuable old rare manuscripts which are mostly used by research scholars. After the digitization, books, research journals and PhD theses kept in the library will be available online. This will help the research scholars in checking the plagiarism of the journals as the soft and hard copies of research journals will be available in the Central Library. Patna University has also introduced the plagiarism check for the research theses from this month and this will continue to provide benefits to students in online mode also. In 2017, the Patna University has completed its 100 glorious years. There are only six other universities in India, which precede the creation of PU and they are — Bombay University, Calcutta University, Madras University (set up as Presidency universities in 1857), Allahabad University (set up in 1887), Banaras Hindu University and the Mysore University. The historical significance of Patna University is prominently visible in the Indian education. Records show that the riverfront campus of Patna University is a part of Magadh kingdom and the very site where it is located, has also witnessed a rebellion in 18th century. The Wheeler Senate House, which has been the centre of all academic activities for more than 90 years, has played an important role in shaping the educational and socio-cultural trends in the eastern region. The university stands equally significant as it was at the time of its inception. The university still has many records to break and establishments to make and with this digitization process the university will add one more chapter in its glorious past. We hope that there will be more such measures to help Patna University regain its old stature. Do you like the article? Or have an interesting story to share?
