Patna-based Hanuman, a tech-driven healthcare startup, has raised 65 lakhs in its seed round from Karekeba Ventures, an incubator-cum-impact investment platform based in Patna.
Hanuman works on an aggregation model for various types of healthcare solutions which include ambulance services, diagnostic services at doorstep, and last-mile delivery of home healthcare over a mobile app and toll-free number.
Started amidst the Pandemic in July 2020, Hanuman is founded by Dr. Niraj Jha, Santosh Kumar from Bakhtiyarpur, and two others from Karnataka.
With more than 350 ambulances on-boarded on its platform, Hanuman is providing services in twenty-two districts of Bihar at present. The founder Niraj says “Apart from Patna, Hanuman is receiving good traction in Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, and Darbhanga.” The company has also made its footprints in the major cities of Jharkhand and small areas of NCR and Mumbai.
The ambulance services are available for basic support, ICU services, Mortuary vans, etc. The doorstep diagnostic services operate under a partnership with labs of national repute. Going forward, Hanuman also aims to provide one-off transactional healthcare services like Insulin administration, ECG check-up, fetal Doppler, and eye checkups at home to name a few. “We are working on the launch of the home healthcare services later this year,” adds the co-founder.
Working towards organizing the highly fragmented healthcare service sector, Hanuman focuses on the price uniformity for ambulance services. “Unlike fixed cab charges, Ambulance charges for patients are based on the situation and time, which tantamount to extortionary practices from the needy patients. Addressing such unprofessional practices and maintaining uniform pricing was our biggest challenge,” adds the co-founder.
“With a base price of 700 rupees for basic life support within ten kilometers which increases fifteen rupees per kilometer and a base price of 3000 rupees for advanced life support with emergency services with an increase in fifty rupees per kilometer Hanuman’s charges are lesser than the regular ambulance charges” explains Niraj.
Launched as an Application, it is accessible through a toll-free number 1800-88-915-88 as well. “To date, we have only about a thousand app downloads, but we receive more than 100 requests on our toll-free number on daily basis, which is a testimony to a successful hybrid model, shares Niraj Jha.
With an ambulance service time of 15 minutes in Patna and around 30 minutes for other districts, Hanuman has served approximately seven thousand patients from July 2020 till date.
With the raised funds, Hanuman plans to work on its geographical expansion. “We started from Bihar, but we don’t want to be restricted to Bihar. We are planning to roll out our services pan India,” says Jha.
Karekeba is a Patna-based angel investment platform for startups working in ‘Bharat’ (under-served geographies like Bihar, Jharkhand, eastern UP, Odisha, West Bengal, etc.), creating impact at the ground level. Anubha Prasad, the founder of Karekeba explains: “Karekeba provides very strong mentoring, hand-holding and nurturing of the startups and builds their investment readiness before they are taken to the investors, and then facilitates the entire end-to-end process of investment. For Hanuman, Karekeba has been able to bring accomplished serial investors on board which is driven by the cause of creating an on-the-ground impact while maximizing their financial returns”. Founded by accomplished co-founders hailing from Bihar, Karekeba is the platform ‘where impact meets financial returns’, adds Anubha.
“During the lockdown, it was very difficult for us to connect to incubators based at Bangalore or Delhi. It was also equally challenging to inspire confidence in angel investors due to obvious geographical barriers and biases against states like Bihar lacking in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. At Karekeba we were provided hands-on mentoring for about 4 months and they were able to make a pitch to their investor network across various geographies and raise our seed round in about a month’s time. All the paperwork was also facilitated by them”.
“I am grateful for the support of Karekeba Ventures, which has helped us throughout the fund-raising process and is still helping us in our scale-up strategy,” adds Niraj Jha. Team Hanuman is confident of scaling up the business to the desired level with the help of Karekeba and succeed in its goal of ‘Bringing Sanjeevani to Life’ for a large population.
