Old age Pension scheme of Bihar Government stands out

Bihar became the first state to launch universal old age pension scheme. Under this scheme , persons of 60 years and above, irrespective of their caste or financial status, will get a sum of Rs 400 per month in his/her bank account.While people of age 80 years and above will get a pension of Rs 500 per month under this scheme.

It is important to know that in other states of the country, old age pension are provided only to the members of BPL families, SC/ST, widow or  people with disabilities . But there is a difference in this scheme in Bihar. Every person above 60 years, if they aren’t getting any other pension either from the state or the cultural govt. will be entitled to get pension under the new scheme named as “Mukhyamantri Vridhjan Pension Yojna.

Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar said,“No other state in the country has such unique scheme where all old age people can get pension”. This scheme has been launched only in Bihar.


At the event of social welfare department while launching this scheme, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, “it would cover around 35-36 lakh people of 60 years and above who have not been covered under any other pension scheme of the State and Central government. He also said that government will make an additional expenditure of Rs 1,800 Crore per annum on this scheme around 2 lakhs applications have been received .”

Total 1, 35,928 applicants were found eligible after verification process. Pension amount of 2 months, i.e. April and May, 2019 has been sent to the bank accounts of beneficiaries today. It is vital to know that this scheme has been applicable from 1st April, 2019.

CM Nitish Kumar stated that the ideas of this new and unique scheme came from the villagers.He said, “When I used to visit villages, several old people used to come to me and say they were not getting any old age pension because their name was not in the list of BPL families. Those peoples seem to be really needy.”

As per the CM’s instruction, the new scheme was earlier planned to be launched in August.CM praised all the officials working for this scheme as they got it ready almost two months before the launched date.

Chief Secretary said, “We made hectic preparations and launched it soon which is too much prior to the scheduled date. Applications under the scheme is being received online only.”

Hope this good news brings some positive change in the lives of senior citizens of Bihar.
