Director – Ritam Shrivastav
Writers – Sanjeev K Rajat, Sarvesh Upadhyay and Shashak Raai
Be it Mirzapur on Amazon, Jaamtara on Netflix or Rangbaaz on Zee 5; looks like everyone wants a piece of cake from the crime drama genre that has taken over the Indian OTT players.
Following the suit is MX Player that has just launched a show called Raktanchal starring Kranti Prakash Jha, Nikiten Dheer, Vikram Kochhar, Pramod Pathak, Chitranjan Tripathi, Soundarya Sharma in pivotal roles.
The nine episode series tells the story of the rivalry between Vijay Singh an up and coming criminal (Kanti Prakash Jha) and Wassem Khan the tender mafia (Nikitin Dheer) are hell-bent to get state development work tender in their name. Vijay Singh is purely motivated by vengeance of his father’s murder who was killed in broad daylight in front of him.
The crime drama is inspired from real-life events of the late 80’s in Uttar Pradesh’s Uttaranchal where two protagonists are at war fueled by politics, corruption and vengeance. The show definitely gives you a glimpse of Gangs of Wasseypur and Mirzapur.
The story runs in two timelines: The present and the past. In the past we see how Vijay Singh, a good law abiding lad, faces adversity of his father’s death and his life turns upside down when he decides to seek revenge. This is again on the same lines of Zee5’s Rangbaaz but that’s how generally people become criminals.
The show is written by Sanjeev K Rajat, Sarvesh Upadhyay and Shashak Raai who have done the job well but the dialogues definitely could have been better. The director Ritam Srivastava known for films like Raajneti has left no stones unturned in giving his best. The overall look and feel of the show stays true to its genre and an applasuible effort have gone in the re-creation of the bygone era of the late 1980’s
Kanti Prakash Jha is totally into the character and has justified the creators trust in him while Nikitin Dheer who also did well could have been better taking into account his previous roles in films like Jodha Akbar, Chennai Express etc. Other lead actors and underrated actors such as Chitranjan Tripathi, Vikram Kocchar, Pramod Pathak have performed well as usual.
Overall if you love crime drama you are going to love this show as-well. Just don’t compare it with the shows of the same genre you have watched. The show definitely succeeds in capturing the true old Purvanchal and gives the audience an absolute glimpse of how various kinds of mafia operated back in the day.
