Bihar’s daughter, Bina Devi famous as Mushroom Mahila was awarded the Nari Shakti Award

Bihar’s daughter, Bina Devi, brought prestige to the state by becoming one of the seven females to handle PM Narendra Modi’s social media accounts. Once started by growing mushrooms under her bed, she has now empowered over 3000 women. Fabled as Mushroom Mahila, she has been into organic farming for a span of 5 years. She has been relentless in her efforts to endow women through mushroom farming.

She was successful in converting fungus to fortunes. Her efforts were nationally recognized when she was awarded the Nari Shakti Award by honorable President, Ramnath Kovind.

Bina Devi, a 43-year-old lady comes from a small settlement named Tilkari in Munger, Bihar. She served as a sarpanch of Dhouri panchayat. Determined to capitalize on mushroom cultivation she received training from Sabour Agriculture University, Bhagalpur in 2010. She has now emerged as a role model for other women in the vicinity. Having mastered the art of mushroom farming, she started motivating nearby women to step up and empower themselves.

She succeeded in transforming the lives of several women who are now capable of earning 2.5 – 6 lacs per annum and can also train their likes in the same field. She is persistently educating on the topics of organic farming, organic insecticides, and compost making. She also provides digital training and has helped around 700 women to use mobile phones single-handedly.

She is also into social work and left no stone unturned while creating awareness regarding the downside of open defecation. Often it’s all talk no action but she herself, went from door to door to warn people against open defecation.

The efforts of this tireless worker finally paid off when she became one of the seven women amongst Kalanti Devi, Arifa Jan, and others, to take over PM Narendra Modi’s social media accounts. A day after surprising everyone by unexpectedly signing off from his social handles, Modi clarified that he would handover his account to a group of 7 talented females, for a day.

“Everything can be achieved by will. My real recognition came from cultivating one kilo of mushrooms under the bed. This not only made me self-sufficient but gave a new life by increasing my confidence”, says the divergent thinker on a video posted on Modi’s twitter handle. The video was broadcasted on IGTV and received a massive response on the platform.

The views hiked up to 3.5 lakhs within hours of posting. A combination of diligence and sensitivity, but she also stands as an inspiration to many.
