Bihar wins Ranji match on its home ground after 42 years

After 42 years, Bihar cricket team has emerged victorious on its home ground by defeating Sikkim cricket team in Ranji Trophy 2018-19. Prior to that, Bihar cricket team has defeated Odisha by an inning and 226 runs in 1976-77 in Moin-Ul-Haq stadium, Patna. Also, when Jharkhand was not carved out of Bihar, Bihar cricket team has defeated Assam cricket team in Ranji trophy 1999-2000 in Jamshedpur.

The victory was achieved in a four-day match, which was scheduled in Moin-Ul-Haq stadium from 28th of November to 1st of December. In the match, Bihar defeated Sikkim by 395 runs, on the third day itself. Sikkim was given a target of 504 runs, where they could only manage to score 108.  The star of the game was Ashutosh Aman, who bagged ten wickets and scored a crucial 89 in the first innings. The next match of Ranji trophy will take place against Arunachal Pradesh in Urja Stadium of Patna, Bihar.

Ranji is a cricket championship played in India between the different state cricket teams of the country. The competition currently consists of 37 teams, expanded from 28 teams in the last series, with all the 29 states of India and two of the seven union territories having at least one representation. The session is the biggest Ranji Trophy ever played in terms of the number of teams and matches.

The competition was named after the first Indian cricketer who played international cricket, ‘Ranjit Singhji’. He was also known as “Ranji.”

The today victory was also one of the five biggest victories of Bihar Cricket team. Other significant victories of Bihar Cricket Team are;

In 1949-1950, Bihar defeated Orissa by 356 runs in Jamshedpur.

In 1974-1975, Bihar defeated Assam by 319 runs in Jorhat.

In 1968-1969, Bihar defeated Orissa by 287 runs in Dhanbad.

In 1999-2000, Bihar defeated Assam by 191 runs in Jamshedpur.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni also made its Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar in the session of 1999-2000. Where he made a half-century. After the division of Bihar and Jharkhand in the year 2000, Bihar Cricket Association saw a downfall. They were even inactive for a continuous tenure of 18 years. But now as they are back, we wish the Bihar Cricket Team good luck and hope to see more wins in the run.
