Bihar achieved 100% electrification two months prior to deadline

The central government on 25th October 2018 announced that electricity has arrived at every household of Bihar. The official website of Saubhagya scheme showed 100% household electrification on Thursday evening. It showed all 1,39,63,909 homes in rural, as well as urban areas in the state, have been electrified. It is also included in one of the seven promises by the State government of Bihar. Per day usage of electricity in the state is around 4500 megawatts.

According to officials of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited, the last date for 100% electrification was 31st December 2018 but the department by working at war level completed the target two months early. According to the report by the central government, the performance of Bihar is best till date in providing electricity to every household.

Other states which have achieved 100% household electrification target as per the website are Madhya Pradesh, Gujrat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab.

Now BSPHCL focusing on mop-up exercise in some districts. Officials of these districts have been asked to notify the state government if any household is left uncovered. The mop-up exercise will be completed in a week, following which the state government may formally announce the 100% household electricity connection in the state on November 1.

The centre’s saubhagya scheme was launched by PM on September 25 last year. The project is aimed at providing electricity connections to over 4 crore families in rural and urban areas in the country. Around 32.46 lakh households in rural areas were electrified under this scheme.

Besides this CM Nitish Kumar also launched the Har Ghar Bijli scheme on November 15, 2016. The state government allocated Rs 1,896 crore for providing electricity to around 25 lakh above poverty line (APL) households under the schemes. Achieving success two months earlier than the promised date showed the efforts made by the electricity board.

In the subsequent execution of the scheme, the state government achieved the first milestone of taking electricity to all villages on December 27, 2017, and to all hamlets on April 30 this year
